Local SEO Checklist: How to Rank on Google Maps in 2026

A practical, step-by-step local SEO checklist to help your business rank higher on Google Maps and local search results in the UK, USA and Pakistan.

Local SEO Checklist: How to Rank on Google Maps in 2026

When someone searches “web designer near me” or “accountant in Glasgow”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. Getting into that map pack is one of the most valuable wins in SEO — and it is very achievable for small and medium-sized businesses.

We run two offices ourselves, in Glasgow and Faisalabad, so this checklist is the same process we follow for our own profiles and for our clients in the UK, USA and Pakistan.

How Google ranks local results

Google explains that local results are based mainly on three factors:

  • Relevance — how well your business profile and website match what the person searched for.
  • Distance — how close your business is to the searcher or the location in their search.
  • Prominence — how well known your business is, including reviews, links, articles and directory listings.

You can’t move your office closer to every customer, but you can improve relevance and prominence. That’s what the checklist below focuses on.

1. Set up and complete your Google Business Profile

  • Claim and verify your profile at business.google.com.
  • Choose the most accurate primary category and add relevant secondary categories.
  • Add your services, service areas, opening hours, phone number and website.
  • Write a clear business description that explains what you do and where — without stuffing keywords.
  • Upload real photos of your team, office, products and work, and keep adding new ones.
  • Publish regular updates and offers, and answer questions customers ask on your profile.
  • Use your real business name. Adding keywords or locations to the name breaks Google’s guidelines.

2. Keep your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Use exactly the same details on your website, Google Business Profile, social media and every directory. Even small differences, such as “Road” versus “Rd”, create confusion for search engines and customers.

3. Build a steady flow of genuine reviews

  • Ask every happy customer for a review, ideally with a direct link sent right after the job is done.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, professionally and promptly.
  • Never buy reviews, write your own or offer rewards in exchange — it breaks Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or your profile suspended.

4. Optimise your website for local search

  • Include your city or region naturally in page titles, headings and content where it’s relevant.
  • Show your full address and phone number in the footer or on your contact page.
  • Embed a Google Map of your location on the contact page.
  • Add LocalBusiness schema so search engines can read your address, phone number and opening hours.
  • Make sure pages load quickly on mobile — most local searches happen on phones.

5. Create genuinely useful local pages

If you serve several areas, create pages that are truly specific to each one: the services you offer there, local projects, how to reach you and answers to local questions. Avoid copying the same page and changing only the city name.

6. List your business in trusted directories

Citations — mentions of your business on other websites — support prominence. Start with the platforms that matter most in your market:

  • Everywhere: Bing Places for Business, Apple Business Connect, Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • United Kingdom: Yell, Thomson Local, FreeIndex and industry bodies relevant to your sector.
  • United States: Yelp, the Better Business Bureau and your local chamber of commerce.
  • Pakistan: Google Maps is the priority, plus local business directories and active Facebook and Instagram pages with matching details.

7. Earn local links and mentions

Sponsor a local event, join your chamber of commerce, partner with nearby businesses or share expert comments with local news websites. Links from respected local sources are a strong prominence signal.

8. Track your progress

  • Use the performance insights in Google Business Profile to see searches, calls, website clicks and direction requests.
  • Check Google Search Console for the local queries bringing people to your website.
  • Record rankings for your most important “service + city” searches every month.

Country-specific tips

United Kingdom

Target google.co.uk with UK spellings and terminology, and keep your details consistent with official records such as Companies House.

United States

Reviews on Yelp and your profile on the Better Business Bureau carry weight with American customers, alongside Google reviews.

Pakistan

Many customers contact businesses straight from Google Maps by phone or WhatsApp, so keep your number up to date, enable messaging where possible and consider content that matches searches in both English and Urdu.

Common local SEO mistakes to avoid

  • Adding keywords or city names to your business name.
  • Using a virtual office or PO box as your address.
  • Creating duplicate profiles for the same location.
  • Ignoring or deleting negative reviews instead of responding.
  • Letting opening hours and phone numbers go out of date.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Improvements to your Google Business Profile can affect visibility within a few weeks, while reviews, citations and local content typically build stronger rankings over three to six months, depending on competition in your area.

Can I rank on Google Maps without a physical address?

Service-area businesses that visit customers can hide their address in Google Business Profile and set a service area instead. You still need a genuine business location; virtual offices and PO boxes are not allowed.

Do reviews really help local rankings?

Yes. Google lists prominence, which includes review count and ratings, as a local ranking factor. Reviews also influence whether searchers choose your business. Always ask real customers and never buy or incentivise reviews.

Should I create a separate page for every city I serve?

Only if each page offers genuinely useful, unique information for that location, such as local services, projects, team or contact details. Near-identical city pages can be treated as doorway pages and harm your rankings.
